This is the last blog in the Houseman Grass Series and is about St. Augustine grass in Georgia.

This grass is a warm-season lawn grass that is popular for cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions. It is a medium- to high-maintenance grass that forms a thick, carpetlike sod, crowding out most weeds and other grasses.

Description

St. Augustine is a coarse, broad-leafed grass, which has a lower cold tolerance than other warm-season grasses and is not often found as far north as Atlanta. It is ideal for areas along the South Georgia coast and fares well in lawns that receive partial shade because it performs best in moist soil.

When it comes to cold weather, St. Augustine is definitely not the most tolerant, but it will survive the mild Atlanta winters. It is common to lay down sod or use plugs when adding St. Augustine to their lawns.

Drawback

St. Augustine grass does not tolerate compacted or waterlogged soil conditions.
